Call for Applications: 12 PhD Positions

The Research Training Group minor cosmopolitanisms (University of Potsdam, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) is announcing 12 positions for PhD researchers, starting on 1st October, 2019, for a period of three years.
Deadline for applications is 1st March, 2019.
Specifically designed as a training programme for early career researchers, the RTGminor cosmopolitanisms offers an international framework connecting Berlin and Potsdam with partner universities in Australia, South Africa, India and the Americas to pursue PhD and postdoctoral projects in a diverse, decentral, collective and convivial environment. Projects within the RTG examine concrete critical, artistic as well as everyday practices which challenge the divide between cultural relativism and humanist universalism haunting the humanities and social sciences. They jointly strive to develop and promote an understanding of cosmopolitanism in the plural which combines visions of transcultural justice, peace and conviviality with an ethical commitment to difference and alterity.

Candidates are invited to apply by proposing their own dissertation project within the thematic scope of minor cosmopolitanisms and within the fields represented in the RTG (Anglophone Literary Studies, Postcolonial Studies, American Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender and Queer Studies, Cultural Anthropology, History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Political Theory, Sociology, German Literary Studies).

The majority of working hours will be reserved for the successful completion of a PhD within a period of three years. The RTG strives for a balanced gender ratio in all occupational groups; therefore women are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification. The RTG specifically encourages applications by international candidates, especially from the global South. The University of Potsdam offers a variety of services for parents, and the University’s Welcome Center provides a variety of services for international candidates, including visa issues.

For more information on the announced position, the required qualifications, and the application process, as well as on the Research Training Group minor cosmopolitanisms in general, please consult the full call for applications (attached) and the website www.uni-potsdam.de/minorcosmopolitanisms.

Workshop: Reading Out Loud with Impact – December 2, 2018

Ever dream of making an audio book, attending an open mic, reading your work on a radio show, or just feeling more confident sharing your writing, or reading someone else’s work out loud? Then this is the workshop for you!
There is something powerful about the feeling of being in front of a group of people, confidently leading them through your story, and keeping their attention until the final sentence.
A great story is certainly a factor but equally important is your delivery. Factors to consider are:

  • A good introduction sets the tone
  • Knowing your material
  • Breath support
  • Diction
  • Pacing
  • Annunciation
  • Emphasis
  • Varying sentence length
  • Rhythm
  • Posture
  • Staying relaxed

Instructor, Catrina Poor, will start the session with tips, things to think about, and demonstrations. Following, each student will have a few chances to read their work and receive feedback from Catrina and the group. Students will also have the chance to break into pairs and practice.

The workshop is limited to 8 participants to ensure multiple opportunities to read.

Bring a story you have written (fiction, non-fiction, memoir, personal essay). The length isn’t important, as you will read excerpts of your choice. If you aren’t a writer but want to improve your reading, feel free to bring a piece of your choice!

Who should attend this workshop?

  • Writers who want to participate in open mic sessions
  • Writers who are published and do book readings
  • Writers who wish to read their stories for radio shows
  • Writers who wish to create podcasts or audio books
  • Anyone who wants to improve their skills and confidence

Fee: €65

Free coffee and tea!
